Larynx cancer ranks 10th among all cancers in Turkey. The primary causes of larynx cancer are smoking and alcohol consumption. Smoking alone can cause larynx cancer, but the risk increases significantly when combined with alcohol. The duration of use and the daily amount of consumption are also important factors in the development of cancer.
The symptoms of larynx cancer include hoarseness, changes in voice quality, cough, shortness of breath, and difficulty swallowing. All these symptoms may be present in one patient, or a single symptom may be indicative of cancer. Since these symptoms can also occur after a simple upper respiratory tract infection, not every case of hoarseness indicates cancer. However, if hoarseness and/or difficulty swallowing persist for more than three weeks, the patient should definitely consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist.
The treatment of larynx cancer varies depending on the stage at which the disease is diagnosed. In early-stage larynx cancer, surgical and radiotherapy treatment options are available. Surgical options include LASER surgeries performed through the mouth or open surgical techniques. The choice of surgery is made based on the characteristics of the patient and the tumor. Larynx cancer detected at a late stage is a treatable disease, although the chances of success are lower. In late-stage tumors, treatments that combine chemotherapy and radiotherapy or open laryngeal surgery may be used.
The most important point in the fight against larynx cancer is to take the correct initial treatment steps. Therefore, experienced ENT-head and neck surgeons will guide you properly regarding your treatment.
